Most mirrors show you the room. The Off Round Hue does something more interesting – it colours it.
Designed to warp perception of space by adding a layer of non-uniform colour , each mirror in the series casts its hue softly across everything reflected in it – walls, light, the people standing in front of it. The effect is immersive without being overwhelming. It changes the room from inside the room.
The Off Round Hue collection grew out of Seeing Glass, an ongoing collaboration between Sabine Marcelis and Brit van Nerven begun in 2013 – an open-ended investigation into optical effects using glass as the primary material, developed directly inside glass manufacturers’ factories. Form, shape and colour come together to play with the perception of one’s own reflection and the surrounding space.
The shapes are hand-drawn. Organic, asymmetric, never quite circular — each one has the quality of something found rather than designed. Hung alone it is a statement. Grouped, it becomes an installation.
