The inspiration for the works is traditional damask weaving – Marie Holst works with traditional techniques, motifs, composition and color scheme. Classic damask is about light and reflection, and in this series she has taken it to an extreme by working with reflective thread.
`From the very beginning, I had a picture of an old damask tablecloth that has been hidden away in a cupboard or drawer for decades. Like a real garden that has not been cared for, the flowers and plants have grown wild on the large work, and examine what we consider to be ‘beautiful nature’ that is worth depicting.
In general, in my work, I am concerned with challenging who or what is depicted in relation to the classic damask tradition, where the format was typically reserved for the elite of society. I would like to move the format into our time, and I am interested in using it to tell what I consider to be some of the most important stories, namely our time’s view of and relationship to nature and climate, and the crises it has generated.´
