FOS’s Diamond Table inverts the gesture of a precious stone. A faceted, mirror-polished steel form – cut like the crown of a brilliant – rests point-down into a rough, pigmented concrete base. The diamond is no longer set above; it disappears into the ground. The base, hand-cast and uniquely coloured, reads as something almost geological: a piece of pigmented matter from which the geometry rises.
The work belongs to FOS’s Eating Table series, in which the table is treated as a small theatre, a quiet stage for the rituals of everyday life. Two opposing materials are forced to negotiate. The cold reflective certainty of polished steel catches the room and the people moving through it. The raw, earthbound texture of cast concrete refuses to look back. Light and weight, mirror and matter, are held in a single object.
Each Diamond Table is unique in colour. It works equally well as a side table beside a sofa, at the entrance to a room, or as a low, gleaming punctuation in an interior.
