Candy Cubes by Sabine Marcelis

A seemingly solid object with a glowing edge. Each Candy Cube begins as a polyester resin mould, cast and then subjected to an intensive polishing process.  The result is light-sensitive: as daylight falls across the surface, it illuminates the edges, appearing to sugar-coat the sides   the object hovers somewhere between sculpture and confection.

Marcelis works closely with fabricators to alter or intervene in production processes so the material itself becomes the central experience.  The Candy Cube is perhaps the purest expression of that – geometry reduced to its simplest form, all attention redirected to what the resin does with light.

The work entered MoMA’s permanent collection in 2014.  It remains in continuous production.

Available as side table, coffee table, bedside table or pedestal. Three sizes; 50 x 50 x 50cm, 60 x 60 x 60cm and 60 x 60 x 30cm. 19 standard colours
