Advanced and Superior by Niels Nielsen

In 2016, the Danish government landed the controversial giant order from the United States on 27 F-35 fighter jets. Niels Nielsen’s piece ‘Advanced and Superior’ exhibits war armament as a Danish export product. The bronze-cast weight plates show the 27 purchased F-35 jets, and as part of a series of sculptural fitness equipment, the piece critisizes the Danish urge to showing off and playing along with the big military nations

With a focus on technology and a conceptual approach to his work, Niels Nielsen seeks to unpack the relation between tradition, democracy and propaganda. Informed by politics, mass media and religious conduct, his work explores how ceremonies and imagery enforce hierarchies within society. By charging formal space, his aim is to separate himself and the audience from the unfocused gaze we so often direct upon the world
