CHRONOS by Objects of Common Interest

The time we dedicate to any object – its use, its contemplation – could be considered the measure of its effectiveness. The true meaning of its existence. However, time is still seen as a human construct. Early Greek philosophers considered Chronos (meaning “time” in Greek) as an illusion. The project by Object of Common Interest requires time to activate a perception that is fully here and now. The material interacts with the slightest variations of light and colors, and with the soft movements of the draping. Aristotle treated time as a measure of motion. Motions of things, motions of human beings.

An abstract white landscape within the middle 3 floor lamps made in a special acrylic resin at the new Objects of Common Interest studio in Piraeus, a distinctive technique as an homage to color – all of them unique pieces. The set design is completed with a limited edition in a polymorph cast aluminum chair and other functional and non-functional objects.
All the elements are made to interact with the visitors, especially the light elements. The perception of alteration – of colors, light and material nature of the surface itself – is emphasized by finishes both glossy and matt.

Art Athina invited Objects of Common Interest to curate a show on collectible contemporary design to be presented for the first time in Athens. Objects of Common Interest has invited people and galleries, that they admire, friends artists and designers leading the contemporary global discourse on collectible design. A selected object by each one, all shown in juxtaposition to each other, a new conversation on domesticity; about form, function, scale, and materiality.

Objects of Common Interest is commissioned to design the square in the city of Bergamo: Piazza Della Libertà.

The Piazza Libertà installation will be inaugurated in early 2023 to coincide with the opening of the celebrations for Bergamo Brescia Italian Capital of Culture under the theme La Città Illuminata (The Enlightened City) is Lights On.

Karl Monies’ light sculpture “Bonum Lumen” translates to “good light”.

The shapes is inspired by fungus and particularly the “Neonothopanus Gardneri”: A Brazilian type of fungi that glows in the dark to draw bugs and insects in order to help them reproduce.

The lamp is made in copper and can be used in- or outdoors.

New WORKS BY CRISTIAN ANDERSEN

Cristian Andersen (b. 1974) has been working at the interface between design and sculpture for a long time. His works are, among other things, often produced using the casting process, whereby a wide variety of materials such as ceramics, concrete or polyester-polyurethane are used and color pigments are often added. In addition to experimenting with the above-mentioned casting techniques, metalworking is as well often implemented in Andersen’s practice.

He is currently working on lighting objects and furniture for the ETH canteen in Zurich Oerlikon.

His works are in the collections of the Danish Art Council, the Collection of the City and Canton of Zurich, Zabludowicz Collection, Mark H. Getty Collection London, Speyer Family Collection New York, Zürcher Kantonalbank, Credit Suisse, Fortis Bank in Belgium and Kunstmuseum St.Gallen among others.

If there is one book we can’t wait to pore over this month, it is Woman Made: Great Women Designers, which artfully compiles the works of 200 designers from more than 50 countries, all of whom have created some of the most important furniture, lighting, ceramic and homeware designs of the last century.

Author Jane Hall’s rigorous research has unearthed a treasure trove of women designers – some of whom have been written out of history – showing that design is not, and has never been, a man’s world.
