The Foggy Gradient Mirror belongs to a new body of work made for Maloja Fog, Sabine Marcelis’ inaugural exhibition at The EP Barn in Maloja. Across more than three metres of coloured glass, a clear reflection gradually gives way to a soft haze, holding the room and letting it go in the same surface.
The work takes its cue from the weather of the valley itself. At the head of the Engadin, a low cloud known as the Maloja Snake sometimes forms at the pass and slips down toward the lakes, dissolving the landscape as it moves. Marcelis translates this slow disappearance into glass: at one end the mirror returns the world precisely, at the other it withholds it, leaving only light and colour. Mounted horizontally, the piece reads less as an object than as a horizon, shifting with the hour and the viewer’s position, in keeping with Marcelis’ enduring investigation of how materials hold, bend and release light.
